~The decline of rome: After Marcus Aurelius died in 180, his son named Commodus Became the ruler. Instead or ruling Rome Commodus mostly spent his time fighting as a gladiator. He was cruel and wasted money. His body guard had enough of him and killed him in 192. they spent a century filled with confusion and fighting was involved. After Commodus death a dynasty of emperors called the severans ruled. They mostly concentrated on rome' borders and paying the army well. they mainly didn't care much about the growth of crime poverty.
~What were some of the political and social problems in Rome?: After the Severan ruler died in 235 many problems began to come. ❈Rome's government became weak..////Because of that over 50 years army leaders fought each other for the throne. During that Rome had 22 different emperors. ❈There were poor leaderships ❈Fewer Roman honored the old idols ❈Talented people refused to serve in the government ❈Wealthy citizens stopped paying taxes ❈ Fewer people attended schools ❈Many of the empire's people now were slaves
~What were some of Rome's economics and military problems? In the 200s economy begun to broke down. Government weakened, law and order broke down. Roman soliders and invaders seized crops and destroyed fields. Hunger begun to spread because farmers grew fewer food and people brought fewer goods. Many business closed and tons of workers needed jobs badly so they joined the army. a d plague occured and it killed 1 out of 10 people in the empire. Rome begun to suffer from Infltion so the government put less gold in the coins. people found out that later so the coins begun to loose value and they stopped using coins instead they begun to borrow. Meanwhile invadors strucked , in the west Germanic tribes railed rome's farms and towns. In the east armies of Persia pushed in the empire's territory. During the fighting the government couldn't pay the soldiers so the Germanics took over.
~What were Diocletian's reforms? In 284 a general named Diocletian became emperor. For him not to be declined he introduced reform and political changes to make things better. Diocletian divided the empire into 4 parts because the empire was too big for 1 person to rule. He tried to boost up the economy by ordering workers to remain in their jobs until they died to produce more goods. He even had rules to slow inflation, but unfortunally many people ignored those rules and he couldn't make them obey it because he didn't have enough power.
~Who was Constantine? Constantine became emperor in 312 after Diocletian retired in 305. to help the economy he had many orders: Sons of workers had to follow their father's trade. Meaning if the father worked in the land their sons had to work there too. If their fathers served in the army the sons had to too. He moved the capital from Rome to a city in the east maned Byzantium. He built a forum called the hippodrome and built many palaces. That city was known as Constantinople, but today its called Istanbul.
~Rome Falls: Both Constantine and Diocletian failed to save the the roman empire. After Constantine died in 337 a new emperor named Theodosius gain control and stopped the fighting. Ruling the empire was hard so he divided the empire into 2 separate empires. One was the western roman empire, its capital was at rome . The other one was the eastern roman empire , its capital was Constantinople.
~Why was rome invaded? Rome was declining and they couldn't keep invadors out. The Germanic was one of them, there were many Germanic groups: Ostrogoth's, Visigoths, Franks, Vandals, Angels, and Saxons. They came to Rome in search for warmer climate and land. Also they were drawn buy Rome's wealth and culture. Huns were fleeing int he eastern Europe and defeated the Ostrogoths. The Visigoths though they would be next so they asked the eastern roman emperor for protection. So they jus settled them in the empire's border, in return they would be loyal to the romans. The romans forced the Visigoths to buy high priced foods, many of then got enslaved, and kidnapped. The Visigoths grew sick of that so they rebelled against the romans. They defeated them in 378 in the battle of Adrianople. Because of they're defeat they has to give up some land. The Germani group saw rome weaking so they crossed rome's borders in search of land. in 410 the Visigoths leader Alaric and his soldier captuerd rome. HWich was a big suprising becaus they havent been captuerd in 800 years.
~Why does rome finally "fall"? In the mid- 400s several germanic leaders held in high posts in Rome government and the army. In 476 a germanic leader named Odoacer took control overthrowinf the western emperor, a 14 yr old boy named Romulus Augustulus. He was the last emperor to rule . Odoacer controlled rome for 15 yrs. A group of Visigoths seized the city and killed Odoacer. They set up a kingdom in Italy under the leader Theodoric. In 550 the western roman empire faded. . The western roman empire fell to germanic invadors, the eastern roman empire prospered it became known as the Byzantine empire, which lasted 1,000 more years.
