How did jews react to roman role? |
In 63 BCE the romans took over Judah. At first they ruled through jewish kings. Then in 6 AD, emperor Augustus turned Judah into a roman providence called Judea. Instead, of a king, a roman govern called a procurator ruled the new province . The jews argued among themselves over what to do about the romans. Some opposed the roman rules closely following jewish traditions. Others favored working with the romans. But still others turned their backs on the romans. They settled in Isolated areas and shared their belongings.

Were jewish rebels successful? |
Some jews believed they should fight the romans and take back control tho their kingdom (AKA Zealots). They convinced many jews to take up arms against the romans in 66 AD. The romans destroyed the temple and killed thousands of jews. A jewish general named Josephus fought in the war but then sided with the romans. He wrote about the horrors of Jerusalem's fall in his work History of the Jewish War.The jews rebelled again in AD 132 and were again defeated. Because of that the romans forced them to leave Jerusalem and were banned too. It was called the diaspora or scattering of jews. By700, the jews settled up communities as far west as Spain and as far east as central Asia. Centuries later, they settled throughout Europe and Americas. The jews kept their faith alive by studying and following their religion laws.

What happened during the life of Jesus? |
During the roman times, jews hoped that god would send a messiah or deliverer. That leader would help them win back their freedom. The israelite prophets had long ago predicted that a messiah would come. Many of the jews expected the messiah to be a great king like David. They thought the messiah would restore the past glories of the Israelite kingdom. A few decades before the first jewish revolt against rome, a jew named jesus left his home in Nazareth and began preaching. Throughout 3o to 30 , Jesus traveled throughout Judea and Galilee, the region just north of Judea, Preaching his ideas. Crowds gathered to hear him preach, He soon assembled a small band of 12 close followers called disciples.

What did Jesus teach? |
Jesus preached that god was coming soon to rule the world. He urged them to turn from their sins. To have a relationship with god. The main point of Jesus' message is given in a group of sayings known as the sermon on the mountain. Jesus taught his listeners to love and forgive each other because god loves and forgives people. He wants people to turn away from bad deeds and be saved. He often used parables to get his message through.

What was the Crucifixion? |
Some people though Jesus was a *messiah because he he helped the sick and did miracles. Others though he was a *deciever. Judea's roman rulers feared him because they thought he would threaten law and order. Jesus went to Jerusalem to celebrate passover with his disciples, which later is known as the Last supper. Fearing trouble, leaders in Jerusalem arrested Jesus and charged him with treason (disloyalty to the government). For his punishment he was crusified (or hung from a cross until dead). This was Rome's way of punishing political rebels and lower-class criminals. Later on Jesus ' Resurrection, or rising from the dead, led to a new religion called Christianity.

Who were Peter and Paul? |
Peter was a fisherman, he was one of the 12 people Jesus had called to preach his message. Christian tradition sates that hw went to Rome after the death of Jesus and helped set up a church there.
Paul was another Christian leader and he was a well educated jew and a roman citizen. Paul at first hated christianity and persecuted christians in Jerusalem. The chief jewish priest in Jerusalem then sent him to damascus, a city in Syria, to stop christians in the city from spreading their faith. While on the road to Damascus, Paul had an unusual experience. According to Christian beliefs, he saw a great light and heard Jesus voice. Paul became a christian on the spot. Hw spent the rest of his life preaching Jesus' message. Paul traveled widely. He founded churches throughout the Eastern Mediterranean. |
What do Christians believe? |
From the beginning, Christians taught that Jesus was the son of God and had come to save people. By accepting Jesus and his teachings, people could gain salvation,or saved from sin and allowed to enter heaven. Like Jesus, after death they would be resureted and join god in everlasting life. Because of their faith in Jesus, christians began to understand god in a new way. Like the jews, christians believed in the god of Israel and studied the Hebrew Bible. However, most Christians came to believe that one God existed in 3 persons: father. son, and holy spirits. This ideas became known as the trinity, which comes from a word meaning "three".
